Portland Radio Authority: Movin’ On Over To the East Side

Portland, Oregon (April 20, 2009) - Portland Radio Authority (PRA), a non-commercial, listener-supported Web-based radio station, has moved its broadcasting operations to a street-floor studio in inner Southeast Portland.

“We are excited about the opportunities for greater accessibility and community involvement that our new location makes possible,” said Mike Jedlicka, PRA Programming Director. “With our recent studio relocation and website relaunch, we look forward to a new chapter in PRA’s history of supporting the local music community.”

The PRA was originally founded in 2003 as a pirate radio station that broadcast a low-power signal over local airwaves and streamed content to worldwide audiences via the Web. In 2006 PRA switched to an Internet-only format after local media interest in the station’s eclectic, regional format drew unwanted attention to its illegal broadcast activities from the FCC. Today, about 55 DJs play weekly two-hour shows that cover a variety of genres, from ambient music to hip-hop to indie rock. The station is funded entirely by DJ membership dues and contributions from individual listeners.

“Moving our studio location from a 6th floor studio in downtown Portland to a ground-floor location in the ActivSpace building is a huge development for us,” said Saffron Peters, PRA Station Manager. “Now we have so much better access to the neighborhood and can expand our involvement in the local music scene.” As part of its efforts, the Portland Radio Authority has been working to provide content to KZME, a commercial-free, broadcast radio station with an all-local format coming to Portland airwaves later this year.
